Last Chance 02:14
STORY: Our [HERO] stumbles upon the fact that the end is near. The [ELDRAZI] have arrived and whatever hope is left will be quickly extinguished. Our [HERO] falls asleep dreaming of a perfect [SAVIOR]. LYRICS: Axe! (Hack!) Chop down a tree. Say: "Take it from me, I’d never hurt anyone, nobody!" When push comes to shove, no shade from above. (I guess it's called oligarchy) Oh hark! Desolate days: the infinite gyre. Quickly dismayed by relentless mire. Try to stay up, can't help getting tired. (You're fired) "Where have you been all of my life?" Your radiant figure seems so sublime. I'm dazzled, enabled; I faint to the news. "Don't you know all these songs I write for you?" Completely immobile in a roomful of cool, I fear that my comment will spoil the mood, so I fake laughter and turn to your smile. "I'll see you in a little while."
2.
Over, dude 02:08
STORY: Just before the inevitable end, our [HERO] makes a desperate attempt to pursue their [SAVIOR] in the face of insurmountable odds. LYRICS: Just when I thought that it was over, just when I thought that it wasn't true, that's when I thought to think it over and see that I saw the thing through. Do you remember that fleck of affection when I turned in your direction and saw? Well, I remember, upon closer inspection, when I notice I was starring at a star. Straight from the station, marinating our relation, trying to stay patient, but it's hard. The train is leaving, and it's heaving to the weekend. You just can't keep dreaming from afar.
3.
Wayfarers 02:13
STORY: In a sad turn of events, populations across the country reject the concept of a magical [SAVIOR]. Our [HERO] is called upon to be brave and take on the looming terror of the ever-approaching [ELDRAZI]. LYRICS: "I think that you’d feel better on a dog walk. Quit hanging with those witches out of town. Constantly talking apocalyptic, what the Hell do you think is going down?" Wayfarers, back in. Don’t want to fight for a dead man. All hope is dust with a pure-bread, come along. Wayfarers, back in. The hurting poor and the sick men, black witches at black masses, come along. "Quit feeling half-a-way about a feeling. Start living all the day with twice the spark. Every great inferno needs ignition, and every dynamo needs its parts." When we going to do it? Fight for the real thing! Reality distortion, ice cold reason.
4.
STORY: The [ELDRAZI] continue their ascension to power. Nothing seems to stand in their way, and our [HERO] reflects on what led the country to such hopeless circumstances. Our [HERO] feels isolated from the dream of their [SAVIOR]. LYRICS: What did we do to make it so? How did we get to such an “I should have known”? Hearken, we will now to begin to try to decipher the awful mess that we’re in. A true move would overthrow. I threaten to fight, yet I do not fight. When the day breaks, you raise the curtain, see the light. If they had warned us, it would be easier to make it through the night. What did we do to make it so? How did we get to such an “I should have known”? Why do they wear us to the bone? They say that the goal is to protect your own Try to reach help by the phone. You've been trying for weeks, but you're still alone. If the kingdom isn't chipping in, then the kingdom grows rancid, and no one answers the call.
5.
STORY: Our [HERO] cowers at a call-to-action from his [SAVIOR], falling into a spell of complacency and sloth as the [ELDRAZI] terror buckles down. LYRICS: Ocasio said to fight the power. Wise wizards said the same. And I yet sit at yonder tower window watching the night ablaze. "Who are we to stop such power?," local oafs opine. November will bring death and destruction, and the witches won’t advise.
6.
Propaganda 01:50
STORY: Waist-deep in disaster, the [SAVIOR] gains momentum against the [ELDRAZI]; however, a misinformation campaign fueled by [ELDRAZI] spawns continues to dismantle the [SAVIOR] at every juncture. LYRICS: Talk about it. Talk about it. It's like they're using counter-magic. Kind of stupid, kind of tragic, mix and matching fact and fiction. Sycophantic, bottom-feeder, a mannequin is no one's leader. Mas-o-menos (more or less), descending into unending chaos. We could make it all free. We want the magic around. We should give the wizard the crown. We could make it all free. Tentacles and thorny capture. It's crystal clear it's us they're after. Start her up, gain some traction. Fall into a chain reaction.
7.
New Family 02:28
STORY: The world at large adjusts to life under the rule of the [ELDRAZI]. Even the [SAVIORS] have gone into isolation. Our [HERO] slowly becomes acclimated to their new lifestyle over a series of deflated weeks. LYRICS: Stranded, stranded: a buckle brigade in a paper boat. Stranded, stranded: lost hold of my balloon of hope. Been a few days now. New family, new family: the new crew’s going to hunker down. We’re depending on the bunker now. Victims to the circumstance. Need someone just to hold my hand. Stranded, stranded: how much more do we have to go? Stranded, stranded: so much that we just don’t know. Been a few weeks now. New family, new family: need a team to tow the line. Leaving the old world behind. Time to let your colors show. People come and people go.
8.
STORY: Our [HERO] is reminded that nature is burgeoning during this self-inflicted human disaster. LYRICS: Animal companion (partner) Like I always said, all I ever needed. Someone by my side, someone to believe in. Got my little guy. Got my little woman. Just a little man, baking bread in the oven. And it had to be you. I need you. You need me. We’ve got ancient history. You will hunt, and I will feed, and I will work, and you will sleep.
9.
Underground 02:37
STORY: Our [HERO] grows truly weary amidst the great [ELDRAZI] take over. Relief and the dream of the [SAVIOR] seems more unattainable than ever. LYRICS: The good news never came. Pure annihilator. Learning the game, but it's not the same as it was before. I try to keep my cool. Turn off the television, un-spool the spool. Shut down the school. Try to stay cool. Winter brought the hit, reborn under punches. Try to stay fit, but I can't commit to being underground.
10.
STORY: Our [HERO] decides between starting a revolution against the [ELDRAZI], or retiring to solitude with his [SAVIOR]. LYRICS: Good luck, bad luck: no matter how you slice or dice it, you can count on magic in times of crisis. For every bad conniver, there are two soul diviners. One day we’ll slice their eyelids. One day they’ll rue their blindness. We’ll make the crooks see brightness. A witch will squelch this violence. Why can’t we figure it out? Why can’t we bury the doubt now? Don’t say it doesn’t matter. We want their heads on a platter We’re sailing onto infinity. I’m holding tight to what means to me. Good news bad news: I just take or leave it. We’ve got our life savings locked up in spirits. I give a nod to the jester. I vow to kill the director Not typically a personnel pleaser, we’re talking Julius Caesar. Why can’t I bottle it up? Why won’t these voices shut up? Don’t say it doesn’t factor. I’m not an over-reactor We’re sailing onto the guillotine. I’m clinging tight to the starting switch.
11.
STORY: Now united with their [SAVIOR], our [HERO] waits out the [ELDRAZI] invasion from the relative comfort of their newfound perspective. LYRICS: Beside my wiccan woman, pondering the night, we think we’ll move the garden to where our plants will get more light. Please don't be sloppy, presume that we aren't keen. We’re doing every damn thing to combat this killer. Back in my bog, sitting on my favorite log, with my witch and a wish that things will get better. It's all a great distortion. We can't carry out our potions. Inside the ceaseless hunger, everyone just take a number.

about

I was inspired to write an apocalyptic album in January after seeing how Bernie Sanders was treated during the primary season. I thought any other candidate would spell disaster, and I likened the DNC to alien-invaders. Then COVID-19 happened, and we had an entirely new type of apocalypse. The themes have morphed and amplified along the way. This is a concept album about facing the end of the world, being lied to by the powers that be, and dreaming of some magical savior from elsewhere. It is also laced with references to Magic: the Gathering.

Please read my STORY and LYRIC notes that accompany each song. They tell the story of how our [HERO] (you and I) join with their [SAVIOR] (progressive movement) to face-down the [ELDRAZI] (the establishment).
